BERMUDA
Bermuda, given its strategically important position between the
Carribean and Europe, has a large number of forts, ramparts, and gun
emplacements; over 60 total. Most are small with minimal or no
information, if they are even accessible. I have listed the most
interesting and informative here.
There are also several shipwrecks visible on the surface or just under, including former HMS Vixen off the west coast, and the Taifun in St. George's harbor.
Bermuda Maritime Museum
Royal Navy Dockyard
The former British naval dockyard has been converted into a large
shopping plaza. In the midst of all the capitalism, there is a museum
on the maritime history of Bermuda, which is, given the geography of
Bermuda, a history of Bermuda itself.
Fort St. Catharine
St. George's, NE corner of the island
Large fort, built up over the 18th and 19th centuries. There are diorama showing a brief history of the colonization of Bermuda, the history of the fort, and a series of displays on the the construction and operation of the fort. There are also spectacular views of the sea, and a ghost.

Sackville is the last surviving and actively commissioned

sought for further restoration of the engineering spaces. Originally a
"short-f'ocsle" corvette, she was refitted during the war - this
alteration is easily seen when inside the messdeck.
The Canadian Parks Service is nearing completion of restoration
of the substantial submarine mining establishment on Georges Island in
Halifax Harbour. The mine storage building, mine railway tracks and
turntable, mine assembly building and workshops have been partially
restored and stabilized. The site including its extensive underground
gun batteries may open to visitors, but only if Parks Canada finds a
private partner to run the interpretation side, as they say they can't
afford to open the site with their own resources.

U-2540 was raised in 1957 by the company Beckedorfand. Sold to
shipyard Howaldtswerke, towed to Kiel. Completely repaired and refitted
by 1958. Given new Type class 241. 1 September 1960 renamed "U Wilhelm Bauer",
Nato "Y 880". Retired from active military duties 1968. On 20 May 1970
returned to active duty by a civilian organization for industrial
testing. Multiple accidents (primarily two collisions with destroyers)
made repairs of the boat too expensive, so re-retired 18 November,
1980. Sold to the Schiffartsmueseu 15 March 1982.
Walk-through tours are available.
The cog was recovered from the mud of the Weser River, and is being preserved.
Parts of submarines on display, such as a TDC and a scope. Many
models ships from sailing ships up to the modern frigates and
destroyers of the Kreigsmarine.
It is advisable to go there between April and October because
only in this period is it possible to visit the ships and the subs,
since they are lying in a harbour basin and therefore are closed for
the public when it may be dangerous to visit them due to weather
conditions.

I have deferred this section to a site created
by Drs. Janet West and M. H. Evans, a wife and husband team. Their site
is very comprehensive, and they will be maintaining it. It lists over
250 museums and 450 historic vessels (many are part of museum
collections, and a large number are small vessels) in the British
Isles, including Ireland. To save space I'll just give a pointer.
The web site:

The file is in the public domain and may be freely used, distributed and copied for non-profit-making purposes.
